 you could just smoke a lot of weed (enough to get a psychedelic effect) and use candles and music (and i like to use tarot cards) and other basic ritualistic materials. but i've found that acid is a good method because there is a mix of somewhat incapacitating hallucination and a very conscious mental barrier destruction. when i've done it, i let myself come in contact with whatever form of demonic or dark nature that i have always been interested in exploring. you just have to let is come out.
